Olive Oil & Black Musk: A Complementary Remedy in Ruqyah

Within the practice of Ruqyah Syar‘iyyah, treatment should always begin with one fundamental principle: healing belongs to Allah alone. The Qur’an, authentic supplications, remembrance of Allah, repentance and strengthening one’s tawhid remain at the heart of ruqyah.

Alongside these foundations, permissible substances may be used as asbab — supplementary means of treatment. One preparation commonly used by some ruqyah practitioners is olive oil mixed with black musk, particularly when dealing with cases believed to involve persistent jinn disturbance or what practitioners commonly describe as jinn ‘ashiq.

Why Olive Oil?

Olive oil occupies a special place in the Islamic tradition. The Prophet ﷺ encouraged both consuming olive oil and applying it to the body, describing it as coming from a blessed tree.

Because oil can be conveniently applied to the skin, many practitioners also use olive oil over which Qur’anic verses have been recited as a medium during self-ruqyah.

The important distinction is that the oil itself does not possess independent supernatural power. It is simply a permissible substance used alongside Qur’anic recitation, du‘a and reliance upon Allah.

Why Black Musk?

Musk (misk) is also recognised positively in the Sunnah and was among the fragrances used in the Prophetic tradition.

Within contemporary ruqyah practice, some practitioners additionally use strong musk fragrances as part of their treatment routine, particularly in cases they associate with unwanted jinn attachment.

However, we should distinguish between what is established by textual evidence and what comes from practitioner experience. There is no clear authentic hadith establishing that black musk specifically repels, weakens or destroys a jinn ‘ashiq.

Therefore, its use in this context should be understood as a permissible complementary practice based on experience, rather than a prescribed Sunnah treatment with guaranteed spiritual effects.

Preparing Olive Oil with Black Musk

A simple preparation can be made using:

  • 100 ml extra virgin olive oil

  • A small amount of genuine black musk fragrance

Begin conservatively with the musk. The resulting oil should remain comfortable on the skin rather than becoming excessively concentrated.

The olive oil may then be recited over with passages commonly used for ruqyah, such as:

  • Al-Fatihah

  • Ayatul Kursi

  • Al-Ikhlas

  • Al-Falaq

  • An-Nas

One may recite directly over the preparation and gently blow (nafth) into it.

How to Use It

Apply a small amount externally before sleeping or during a self-ruqyah session.

Some practitioners concentrate application around the upper chest, neck, shoulders, arms and other suitable external areas of the body.

For someone undergoing ruqyah for suspected jinn ‘ashiq, the treatment should not revolve around the oil itself. Instead, use it while maintaining a consistent programme of Qur’anic recitation, morning and evening adhkar, prayer, repentance and avoidance of sinful or spiritually harmful habits.

The person may apply the oil and then perform self-ruqyah by placing the hand over the affected or uncomfortable area and reciting Qur’an and authentic supplications.

Consistency is generally more useful than excessive application.

Preventive Use

The mixture may also be incorporated into a person's normal self-care routine even when no ruqyah symptoms are present.

Applying a modest amount after bathing or before sleeping can combine three permissible practices: caring for the body, using a pleasant fragrance and maintaining a regular self-ruqyah routine.

But we should avoid creating a belief that wearing black musk itself forms an invisible shield against jinn. Protection ultimately comes from Allah, and the strongest preventive practices remain prayer, Qur’an, authentic morning and evening adhkar, obedience to Allah and maintaining a sound relationship with Him.

An Important Principle

Ruqyah should never become a collection of increasingly elaborate substances and rituals.

Olive oil is an oil. Musk is a fragrance. Both are permissible and have honourable precedents within Islamic tradition.

When Qur’an is recited over them and they are used as part of ruqyah, they remain means — not the source of healing.

The heart of the patient must therefore remain attached to Allah rather than to the bottle in his hand.

Treat with the means.Heal through the Qur’an.Depend upon Allah.
